DUVA ALREADY TAKING TEAM CHINA TO GREAT HEIGHTS -- AT EMPIRE STATE BUILDING TO PROMOTE "EMPIRES COLLIDE" SET FOR FRIDAY NIGHT, OCTOBER 1, AT CAPITALE

Boxing promoter Dino Duva has high hopes of taking the Team China amateur fighters to great heights. That upward move began yesterday when he joined super middleweight Olympian Zhang Jianting and super heavyweight silver medalist Zhang Zhilei at the top of the Empire State Building for a view of Manhattan from the famous 86th floor observatory deck. The Chinese standouts were joined by lead trainer Al Mitchell, Team U.S.A. 114-pounder Miguel Cartagena, Duva’s Global Sports & Entertainment partner Peter Columbia, and the entire Chinese contingent to promote the “Empires Collide” blockbuster amateur card set for Friday night, October 1, in New York City’s Chinatown.

Duva has made the journey to China 14 times, totaling 196,000 miles, over the past two years, establishing a long term relationship with the Chinese Boxing Federation. That road now leads to the Capitale venue, located at 130 Bowery, when Team China squares off against the best United States amateurs.

U.S. hopefuls will face top Chinese ameteurs
September 20, 2010 - by Greg Logan, Newsday.com

When you think of boxing and the countries that produce the best talent, one of the last places most people would consider looking is China. Think China, and you think martial arts. "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon."

But when boxing promoter Dino Duva attended the 2008 Beijing Olympics in search of the fledgling talent he needed to help regain a foothold in the promotional business, he was surprised to find himself drawn to the home country's boxers. "I was amazed," Duva recalled recently. "Some people had told me they had a couple good fighters, but I had no idea how good they were.

"With two golds and four medals, they really shocked me. It was no fluke, either. These guys can really fight. I just fell in love with the Chinese boxers. That's my whole business right now."

The best of China is getting set to take on the U.S. in “Empires Collide,” a 13-bout men’s and women’s amateur card Oct. 1 at Capitale in Manhattan’s Chinatown. Both conditioners have been highly successful working the amateur boxing ranks as well as professionals at the top of the sport.
